Bessie Chatman Obituary

Proverbs 3:5  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and he shall direct thy paths.

It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of Ms. Bessie L. Chatman of Bronx, NY, formerly of Rembert.  Ms. Chatman entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Workmen's Circle Nursing Home in Bronx.

Bessie was born to the late Emma and Ervin Chatman in Sumter, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by three sisters: Hester David, Alice Wells, and Allena Fowler; three brothers: Ervin Chatman, Jr., Sam Chatman, and Westbury Chatman.

At an early age, Bessie joined Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Rembert, South Carolina. She later relocated to New York and joined the Creston Avenue Baptist Church in Bronx, New York.  She loved the Lord and truly enjoyed worship.

Bessie was employed as a Radiology Technician at Saint Clare's Hospital in Manhattan, New York.  She was later employed at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and Jacobi Hospital, where she later retired.

Bessie loved her family and was very much loved by her family. It was a joy for her to help her family, as well as others.  Another of her enjoyments was that she loved to travel.

Bessie leaves to cherish her memories one sister: Millie Rice of Plainfield, New Jersey; three brothers: Richard Chatman (Frances), devoted caretakers of Bronx, New York, Levan Chatman (Debra), John Chatman all of Rembert, South Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family of Ms. Bessie Chatman in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state and local community, has decided to hold a private, family only, service for their loved one. While the Chatman family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. What the family needs most at this time are your prayers and understanding.  There will be public viewing on Thursday, May 21, 2020 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the funeral home. Thank you for your concern and cooperation.
