Almeta Singleton Obituary

It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of Mrs. Almeta Johnson Singleton who entered into rest August 16, 2022 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

Almeta Johnson Singleton was born in Camden, South Carolina on June 12, 1948 to the late Virgil and Millie McClain Johnson.  She was the fifth child out of nine children.  Almeta was affectionately called "Mena" by her family and friends.  Mena left South Carolina as a teenager and joined her big sister, Marie also known as "Tanzie", in Brooklyn, New York.  She completed her education in the New York City school system.  Following graduation, she was employed by MetLife Insurance, New York, NY, for many years.  For those who knew Mena in her early years, she was the original “fashionista”.  She dressed impeccably and mastered makeup beautifully.

After working many years, Mena married and became the mother to Vernon Singleton.  Not wanting Vernon to be an only child, she added another son, Kaunda, to her family.  Mena was big on family and was always there to take care of her nieces and nephews.  She could be counted on whenever you needed her whether it was cooking, cleaning or caring for a family member.

Mena knew and worshipped the Lord.  She was indeed a bible scholar.  She was extremely active at Tabernacle for All People, Brooklyn, NY, for over 30 years until her health began to fail and she relocated from Brooklyn to Queens, NY.  You could count on her to serve in any ministry.

Mena found love again later in life and married Rev. Roy O. B. Duncan who passed away on July 18, 2014.  Although her family moved away from New York, Mena was a New Yorker until the end.  She would always talk about going back to her apartment in New York.

In November 2021, Mena was brought back to South Carolina by her son Vernon.  He wanted her to have the best care and brought her into his home where he ensured she had around-the-clock care by himself, her daughter-in-law Sinathia and sister Allean.

She was predeceased by her husband – Rev. Roy Duncan, parents - Virgil and Millie Johnson, her brother - Albert Johnson, her sister - Marie Jenkins, niece - Marilyn Jenkins and nephew - Ronald Jenkins.

She leaves to mourn, her sons, Vernon (Sinathia) and Kaunda (Amy), five sisters, Alma McDaniel of Elgin, SC, Jessie Shaw (Billy) of New Castle, DE, Allean Johnson of Elgin, SC, Alberta Allen of Camden, SC and Amy Allen of Camden, SC; one brother, Virgil Johnson of Camden, SC, four grandchildren – Quaneisha, Nasir, Josiah and Malachi and a host of relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 20, 2022 in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.  Viewing will be held from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
